Suffragan See of Tonbridge

The Queen has approved that the Reverend Brian Colin Castle BA, MA, PhD, be appointed to the Suffragan See of Tonbridge in the Diocese of Rochester in succession to the Right Reverend Brian Arthur Smith MA M.Litt on his translation to the See of Edinburgh.

The Reverend Dr Brian Castle (aged 52) studied at London and Oxford Universities before going on to Birmingham University where he studied for his doctorate. He trained for the ordained ministry at Cuddesdon College, Oxford. He served curacies at St Nicholas, Sutton and Limpsfield and Titsey in the Southwark diocese between 1977 and 1981. Between 1981 and 1984 he worked in Northern Zambia as a parish priest through the United Society of the Propagation of the Gospel. From 1984 till 1985 he went to Geneva to be a Lecturer at the World Council of Churches Ecumenical Institute. He returned to the UK in 1985 as Vicar of North Petherton with Northmoor Green in Bath and Wells diocese after which he went on to be Director of Pastoral Studies and Vice Principal at Ripon College Cuddesdon, Oxford.

Dr Castle is married to Jane and they have three children. His interests include fly fishing and cross country skiing.
