Project: Philips Park
Applicant: Bury Metropolitan Borough Council
Programme: Parks for People Project Planning
Location: Manchester, Lancashire
Region: North West
Amount awarded: £44,200

Description: The park comprises the formal gardens and semi-natural grounds of the Philips Family Estate as developed by them between 1790 and 1945. The Philip's House, The Park, was demolished in 1950 but estate buildings (some listed), garden structures (some listed) and planting survives, despite disturbance caused by the construction of the M62 (now the M60) along one boundary in 1970. The park is situated on a promontory with the Irwell Valley to the south west and tributary wooded cloughs to north west and south east. The park is located 1.5 kms to the west of Prestwich town centre and 2.5kms by road from junction 17 of the M60.
