Lord Justice Scott Baker
Assistant Deputy Coroner of Inner West London

Statement

26 November 2007

The Court of Appeal judgment on the judicial review decision in:

Jean and Giselle Paul and The Ritz Hotel
v
Assistant Deputy Coroner of Inner West London

The Coroner is disappointed with the Court of Appeal’s judgment, as it is likely the effect of this decision will be to prolong the inquests and increase costs.

However, the Coroner will do what he can to minimise these while taking such steps as he can to enable the jury to hear the evidence, in a manner consistent with the Court of Appeal’s judgment.

We cannot say what further steps the coroner will be taking, but we are sure he will give close attention to the reasons of the Court of Appeal when these are available.
