Rural Development Service (RDS)

Defra's Rural Development Service has around 1400 staff working from 8 regional offices leading the delivery of the England Rural Development Programme (ERDP). Staff skills range from an expertise in environmental enhancement, wildlife conservation and rural economy, through to the administration of a multi-million pound grant budget. This makes the RDS the single largest organisation working in rural communities in England.

Rural Payments Agency (RPA)

RPA was established on 16 October 2001 as an Executive Agency of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). RPA is responsible for the CAP payment functions formerly delivered by the Defra Paying Agency and the Intervention Board. The full development of RPA will take until 2005 and involves a major change programme.

Government Offices for the Regions (GOR)

Government Offices (GOs) are playing an increasingly pivotal role at the heart of Government. They are key agents of Government for the English Regions, ensuring effective delivery of Government programmes regionally and locally. GOs' work with regional partners including local authorities, Regional Development Agencies and other organisations, to achieve the Government's aims in a joined up way.

GOs bring together the activities and interests of nine different Government Departments, including Defra, within a single organisation. This makes them uniquely well placed to take a cross-departmental approach and to provide a coherent view of the operation and interactions of Government programmes - as part of central Government, their role includes providing a regional perspective to inform the development and evaluation of policy.

Information about the services provided by the Government Offices for the Regions are provided on the regional GO websites
