On 18 January 2005, the Government published Parental Separation: Children's Needs and Parents' Responsibilities, Next Steps. This document responds to the consultation on the Green Paper on the same topic which was launched on 21 July 2004.

Over 250 responses were received to the consultation, with the majority welcoming the general direction of the Green Paper. The response document, published jointly by the Department for Education and Skills, the Department for Constitutional Affairs and the Department for Trade and Industry, sets out a summary of responses received to the consultation and outlines the agenda for action which the Government plans to implement over coming months.

Supporting children during separation and divorce

Parenting Plans: Putting your children first
A guide for separating parents

Parenting Plans is a publication designed to help parents and other relatives to reach agreement about contact arrangements for their children following parental separation and divorce. Parents can use the plans to decide, together with their children where practical, what arrangements will work best with them. Parenting Plans covers the issues to consider in making contact arrangements, includes case studies showing how people have resolved issues to agree contact arrangements and provides a list of organisations that can be contacted for further advice and help.
