Child Abuse Investigation Command
Who we are
The Child Abuse Investigation Command investigates child abuse
and deals with paedophile issues across London, working closely
with other child protection agencies.
The command’s core objective is to identify and investigate
allegations of child abuse, namely, physical, sexual and emotional
abuse of children in London. The command’s specialist detectives
and police staff work in conjunction with colleagues from Social
Services, Health, Education and other agencies to provide counter
measures to ensure a safe environment for London’s most
vulnerable citizens. The command has nineteen Child Abuse Investigation
Teams spread across London aligned to local
boroughs who are also responsible for investigating all Sudden
Unexpected Deaths in Infants (SUDI) that occur in the capital.
What we do
The Major Investigation Teams investigate child
homicide and ith large complex abuse enquiries within the family
The Paedophile Unit specialises in combating
the activities of organised paedophiles and those who manufacture
and distribute paedophile material/child pornography across London.
The Hi-Tech Crime Unit provides technical computer
support and has the capabilities to arrest and prosecute offenders
that target children through the Internet.
The Safeguarding children and Development Unit
provides information and support to the MPS on prevention and
partnership initiatives and works strategically with the London
Child Protection Committee. Other work includes supporting the
Safeguarding Children Independent Advisory Group and directing
a community partnership initiative around prevention and education
within distinct communities of London.
The Ports Safeguarding Team are a small team
of detectives based at Heathrow Airport working closely with Immigration
Officers dealing with child protection issues, which include child
trafficking, child abduction and the monitoring of high-risk sex
offenders entering and leaving the UK.
