UK consumption of sawnwood stood at 2,782 thousand cubic metres in 2004, a rise of 0.5 per cent on a year earlier. Over the same period imports fell by 0.8 per cent from 8,714 to 8,647 thousand cubic metres, while exports rose by 3.9 per cent from 356 thousand cubic metres in 2003 to 370 thousand cubic metres in 2004. Since 1994 imports of sawnwood have increased by 10.2 per cent while exports have risen over 5 times their 1994 level.
UK consumption of wood based panels rose by 23.8 per cent between 1994 and 2004. Between 2003 and 2004 consumption of these products show a rise of 7.9 per cent from 6,312 thousand cubic metres to 6,808 thousand cubic metres...
Since 1994, consumption of paper including paper board rose 16.8 per cent. Between 2003 and 2004, consumption rose 1.0 per cent from 12,019 thousand tonnes to 12,135 thousand tonnes. Paper production remained broadly stable, while imports and exports both fell, indicating increased use of domestic paper production, however data are subject to annual fluctuation and the longer term trend shows a rise in both imports and exports of paper and paper board.
