Sappers take chainsaw to contract

The Defence Logistics Organisation has chosen, through a competitive tender exercise involving extensive user trials, the Makita DCS 5000 chainsaw to equip the Royal Engineers, as part of a contract worth approximately 300K.

The Royal Engineers are a key combat support unit with responsibility for the preparation of battlefield infrastructure and the provision of temporary accommodation. Chainsaws are used to help clear sites quickly and effectively, in particular trees and old structures.

Under the contract, Makita will supply the Royal Engineers with 700 chainsaws, together with accessories and spares support by the end of the year.

Notes to Editors

The Makita DCS 5000 has a 50cc 2-stroke engine, producing 3.8hp with a 2,800 watt power rating.  Equipped with a 45cm bar and full chisel 686 type chain, this chainsaw is ideal for all regular tree felling operations, and the saw has also proved particularly well suited for the quickly cleaning and sizing of felled timber.  This capability meets military requirements and will be ideally suited to meet the tasks Royal Engineers perform during operations and in training.
