Type 45 logo

Background Information

Equipped with the Principal Anti-Air Missile System (PAAMS), the prime role of the new Type 45 Destroyer will be Anti-Air Warfare (AAW): protecting UK national and allied/coalition forces against enemy aircraft and missiles. The Type 45 Destroyer, in concert with the planned future aircraft carrier, will provide the backbone of the Royal Navy’s air defences for much of the first half of the 21st century. In addition to its AAW role, the Type 45 will be capable of operations across a spectrum of tasks, from peace support to high intensity warfare. Six ships are currently on contract with the T45 Prime Contractor, BAE SYSTEMS.
