Although trade figures have fluctuated over the years bilateral trade relations remain good. Barbados was the UK's 5th largest
export market in the Caribbean in 2002. However, when seen as part of the wider, fragmented 7-country East Caribbean market
covered by the British High Commission in Bridgetown, it is the second largest market for British exports to the Caribbean.
Traditionally the UK has maintained close trading links with Barbados despite strong competition from the United States, Canada
At least one UK Trade & Investment supported outward mission visits Barbados each year. A second outward mission usually visits
one or two East Caribbean islands during the year.
Barbados is a small market in UK terms, but it remains an important market for UK exporters in the region. In 2002, UK exports
to Barbados were £39.60 million.
There are no accurate figures for the level of invisible exports (banking, insurance, consultancy, etc.), however, these services
are of considerable importance to bilateral trade.
In 2002, Barbados exports to the UK amounted to £25.01 million.
The principal denominations are Anglican, Roman Catholic and Methodist.
Bridgetown, situated in the south-west, is the capital and principal commercial centre, with a population of about 104,000.
