"Through the eyes of the soldier" - developing a teacher's resource pack on the First World War

The grant is to employ an education consultant to develop the pack for the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers (Royal Warwickshire). The specialist will bring knowledge of the education system, that none of the employees at the museum possess, to make the pack as relevant as possible to teachers.

The resource pack for key stage 3 history will be based upon the lives of one or more soldiers. Focusing on personal stories should stimulate and engage students. Using the experiences of the soldiers will bring history alive and allow the students to empathise with them. They are no longer merely facts and figures in books, but real individuals. Students will be encouraged to examine the sources, to discover things and to think for themselves.
The pack will be open ended and flexible to meet different teaching styles. It will incorporate outline lesson plans, activity sheets and suggestions for cross-curricular links, particularly with ITC and literacy. There will be ongoing consultation with various organisations, especially teachers in the region.

It is an exciting project that will enable the regimental museum to develop one of its core functions - "education lies at the heart of our museum." This will help to broaden the audience and enable more people to enjoy and learn from the collection. Using the rich archive material in the reserve collection will also increase access and raises public awareness. The project is part of an ongoing process to build up the education service.
