The Designation Challenge Fund

The Designation Challenge Fund (DCF) was set up by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport in 1999 in recognition that these outstanding collections need caring for and interpreting to ensure that they are enjoyed by our future generations.

The core aims of the Fund are to promote excellence and raise standards of museum provision and to enable those with Designated Collections to provide high quality services, which deliver the fullest possible access to their collections.

This is achieved through:

  • Promoting Excellence
  • Raising Standards
  • Delivering Public Benefits
  • Encouraging Partnerships
  • Encouraging Investment
  • Evaluation

How much has been awarded to date?
The first DCF programme awarded £15 million during the period 1999-2002. A further £5.2 million was awarded during the period 2002-04. Through Renaissance in the Regions, DCF grants totalling £3.8 million have now been awarded towards projects which will run from 1 April 2004 to 31 March 2006. Grants will be used for projects to care and research 39 of the country's finest collections held in non-national museums and galleries.
