Contents

L/MIL/5/42-141

The series consists of original and copy nominal rolls, extracts from Military Letters, General Orders, correspondence, memoranda and receipts, used by the Military Departments at East India House and the India Office for the actual ordering and despatch of medals. Apart from the three items L/MIL/5/134-136, it is in no sense a 'formal' series. The volumes were made up from loose papers at a later date, with frequent duplication, and only some of the medals issued to the armies in India are covered.

Most of the nominal rolls are arranged in order of regimental precedence and they are often annotated with details of death and next-of-kin; few are indexed. Those covering the Presidency Armies and the Indian Army are basically concerned with Europeans only and the names of Indian soldiers rarely appear.

Military Correspondence with India (see L/MIL/3) and Soldiers' References (see L/MIL/5/362-375) also contain references to the award of medals, particularly claims subsequent to the original issue.

For full information on the various issues up to L/MIL/5/125, see Medals and Decorations of the British Army and Navy, J H Mayo, 2 vols, London 1897.
