Suffragan See of Hertford

The Queen has approved the appointment of the Reverend Canon Christopher Richard James Foster MA, Canon Residentiary and Sub-Dean of the Cathedral and Abbey Church of Saint Alban, to the Suffragan See of Hertford in the Diocese of Saint Albans in succession to the Right Reverend Robin Jonathan Norman Smith MA on his retirement.

Notes for Editors

Canon Foster (aged 47) studied theology at Westcott House, Cambridge after lecturing in Economics at the University of Durham. He served his first curacy at Tettenhall Regis, Wolverhampton in Lichfield diocese. From 1982 to 86 he was Chaplain at Wadham College, Oxford and curate of the University Church of Saint Mary with Saint Cross and Saint Peter, Oxford. From 1986 to 1994 he was Vicar of Southgate in North London and Continuing Ministerial Education Officer. Since 1994 he has been Sub-Dean of Saint Albans Abbey. Canon Foster is widowed with a teenage son and daughter. His interests include current affairs and economics, supporting Wolves, entertaining and visiting beautiful Shropshire.
