1000 Grassroots Grants help small community groups through hard times

A children’s music group in Southwark, London has received £5000 and become the 1000th grant recipient of the Office of the Third Sector's groundbreaking £130m Grassroots Grants scheme. Grassroots Grants aims to boost local community organisations with much-needed access to small grants and long-term financing through an endowment fund.

OTS recruiting for new Queens Award for Voluntary Service committees


The Office of the Third Sector is recruiting chairs and members for two new Committees that will uphold the prestige of The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service and will play central roles in recommending groups to The Queen.

First Community Assets grant confirmed

The £30 million Community Assets programme, funded by the Office of the Third Sector and delivered by the Big Lottery Fund, has confirmed the first grant to be £337,000 funding for the Pelton Fell Community Resource Centre in Chester-le-Street. Under the scheme, the centre will be transferred into the hands of the community who will actually use it.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has launched its new Third Sector Strategy along with a new £6 million fund to help third sector organisations support and develop environmental projects throughout England.

Compact Week 2008: Making the Compact a Reality

An awareness week is being held to mark 10 years of the Compact, the agreement which sets out how voluntary groups and charities work with the Government. Compact Week takes place from November 1-8 and aims to promote the Compact across Government, public sector organisations and the third sector, highlighting how the Government and the third sector can work together to benefit communities.

New Third Sector Research Centre Launches

The Third Sector Research Centre (TSRC) officially opened its doors today (Thursday 23rd October), at the University of Birmingham. The TSRC will be led by Professor Pete Alcock of the University of Birmingham, in a joint venture with the University of Southampton where Professor John Mohan will be Deputy Director. The funding of £10.25 million over the next five years will come from the Office of the Third Sector (OTS), the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), and The Barrow Cadbury Trust.
