Conclusions
The Council agreed:
- to write to the Chancellor setting out some broad comments on the ten year investment framework for science and innovation and asking how CST could assist Government with reviewing progress on implementing the framework. Sir David King, Sir Keith Peters, Dr Hermann Hauser and Professor Alan Hughes would represent the Council in a meeting with the Rt Hon Paul Boateng MP, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, on 21 April where these issues would also be raised.
- to establish subgroups on:
- Convenor: Professor Geoffrey Boulton
- Members: Professor Janet Finch, Sir Paul Nurse, Professor Kathy Sykes
- Observer: Professor Sir John Beringer
- Convenor: Dr Mark Walport
- Members: Professor Janet Finch, Professor Wendy Hall
- Convenor: Professor Michael Sterling
- Members: Professor Sir John Beringer, Dr Dieter Helm, Dr Sue Ion
- Observer: Professor Geoffrey Boulton
- Convenor: Professor Alan Hughes
- Members: Dr Hermann Hauser, Mr Andrew Gould, Dr Rob Margetts, Dr Raj Rajagopal
- As general principles: the convenors of subgroups must be able to take a balanced view of the area of work and should not therefore have strong pre-existing links which might be seen as prejudicing their view; the subgroups themselves will define and develop their work programmes in consultation with the full Council; the core group of CST members that forms each subgroup will draw on external expertise in a variety of ways.
- CST will work with the Office of Science and Technology to decide how CST can best provide advice on the use of science in Government.
