SUMMARY OF COUNCIL MEETING ON 16 MARCH 2004

1. The meeting was chaired by Sir David King. The independent members present were:
Professor Sir John Beringer; Professor Geoffrey Boulton; Mr Andrew Gould; Professor Wendy Hall; Dr Hermann Hauser; Dr Dieter Helm; Professor Alan Hughes; Dr Sue Ion; Dr Rob Margetts; Sir Paul Nurse; Sir Keith Peters; Professor Michael Sterling; Professor Kathy Sykes; Dr Mark Walport.
2. Also in attendance were: Jeremy Clayton, Group Director, Office of Science and Technology; Judy Britton, Director, Transdepartmental Science and Technology, Office of Science and Technology; Lynne Edwards, CST Secretariat; Jacqui Russell, CST Secretariat.
Conclusions
The Council agreed:
- to establish a sub-group on science and society. The membership and remit will be confirmed at the next meeting
- to respond to the government’s consultation on science and innovation: working towards a ten-year investment framework and to seek a meeting with Paul Boateng MP, Chief Secretary to the Treasury on this matter
- to continue their discussions on how to develop the Council’s work programme at their next meeting
- to meet quarterly in March, June, September and December. To enable the Council to make progress on developing its work programme an additional meeting will be scheduled for April 2004
- that Dr Hermann Hauser should represent the Council at the meeting of the science policy advisory councils of EU member states in Luxembourg in June 2004
