A1. Alcohol Labelling
1 January, 2013
Submitted: 29 April, 2015
Please describe the progress you have made on alcohol labelling, over the last year (2000 characters limit):
As of April 2014 100% of our SKUs packaged for UK sales contained four of the five elements of the Alcohol Labelling pledge.
- Alcohol unit information
- Drinking while pregnant warning label
- Enjoy Responsibly messaging
However, since agreeing to sign up to the pledge in 2012, concerns were raised regarding the legal implications that the addition of the fifth element – the Chief Medical Officer’s (CMO) guidance labelling – would have on our ability sell across EU and non-EU markets.
Following extensive due diligence, we agreed at the time of last year’s annual update that we would be in a position to proceed with adding the CMO guidance to the back labels of a large percentage of our UK SKUs.
We are pleased to report that in the last year we have therefore been able to get to over 95% full compliance with the Alcohol Labelling Pledge.
Treasury Wine Estates’ (TWE) portfolio sold in the UK is packaged two different ways: the first group is bulk wine which is shipped to the UK and then bottled/packaged in the UK. The second sees the wines packaged at source and then transported into the UK.
The wines that are shipped in bulk and packaged in the UK are 100% compliant across all SKUs. The compliance figure varies slightly for wines bottled in the country of origin (Australia: 93%; USA: 98% and New Zealand: 100%). Over the coming year as new stock comes onto line we are confident of getting as close to 100% compliance across our portfolio as possible.
