A4. Tackling Under-Age Alcohol Sales

Marston's Inns and Taverns has an age verification policy in place in all of the division's pubs and bars. The policy is based around 'Challenge 21' which follows the British Beer and Pub Association model. In a very few sites this has been modified to 'Challenge 25'. This is supported by training for all staff on the law relating to underage sales. All new staff receive training prior to their first shift. This training is reinforced by the company's team member induction training book. All new staff then have to complete an e-learning module on licensing law within twelve weeks of joining the company. We have recently decided that all staff must refresh all their e-learning modules again on the three-year anniversary of joining the company. This must be completed within six weeks of this date. The policy is now in place. As from 1/10/11 we are auditing all training using a revised 'due diligence' audit form which places greater weight on all areas of training covering 'Challenge 21' and 'Under Age Sales'. This audit also ensures that all staff notice boards have messages concerning 'under age sales' and all pubs and bars are displaying 'Challenge 21 materials. All new staff uniforms are embroidered with 'R U 21'. Christmas and new year are very busy periods in bars and pubs. All managers have been sent a new notice for the staff notice boards pointing out the penalties of serving under age. The managers have been instructed to run a pre Christmas training session for all staff which will be documented. This training will be complete by 12 December. The company monitor 'refusals' via the EPOS tills. The company employ a firm to conduct in-house 'test purchasing'.Going forward the company will be reviewing:the way that 'refusals' at head office are monitored with the purpose of introducing a more formal system of review [by 2/3/2012].the categories of 'refusals' on the tills will be reviewed and revised with a brief to all pub and bar managers [by 30/3/2012].there will be a review of the company's 'at risk' sites with a view to introducing shift sign-on sheets reminding staff about under age sales [by 2/3/2012].
