P3. Active Travel
1 January, 2013
Submitted: 29 April, 2013
Through your physical activity pledges you will be working with employees, customers/consumers and/or local communities. For each group (as applicable) please describe the specific activities or projects you have undertaken over the past year.
For example, employee incentive schemes to promote physical activity, awareness raising activities or improvements to facilites to promote active travel.
Following a successful application to the Department for Transport (DfT) for the Local Sustainable Transport Fund, Middlesbrough Council is able to offer pool bikes to workplaces across Middlesbrough to support and promote sustainable transport. Hope North East was successful in gaining 2 bicycles. As part of Middlesbrough's Pool Bike Scheme we used them for short/long term hire by employees to cycle to work, used as part of business travel between sites for employees, or even made available for recreational purposes such as lunch time rides.
Cycling is a great way to reduce congestion within workplace driveway/car-park, and goes someway to promote a healthy lifestyle to your employees, along with helping to achieve Carbon savings. We have found:
- Improved health
- A positive impact on stress, back pain and mental health
- Increased productivity
- Lower rates of absenteeism and quicker return to work after illness
- Fewer injuries in the workplace
- Greater staff retention
- Improvements in communications, morale and working atmosphere
- A positive corporate image.
- To stay healthy and productive employees should aim to get 30 minutes of activity into each working day.
Employees who participate in workplace physical activities have reported greater enjoyment of their work, increased concentration and mental alertness and improved co-operation and rapport with colleagues.
Sport and physical activity can play a major contribution in improving health and reducing the risk of many diseases and ailments
For example, supporting/sponsoring local physical activity programmes, promoting physical activity to customers through website campaigns or in-store materials.
For example, support for community-based physical activity programmes (such as funding, sponsorship or other promotion activity), working with local partners to engage communities is physical activity opportunities.
Please estimate the number of your employees who report they are regularly using active modes of travel and explain how you arrived at this estimate.
2 use the scheme bicycles, 1 uses their own bicycle.
Has the number of your employees using active modes of travel increased since last year? If unkwown, please explain why:
yes - from 0 to 3.
If your active travel pledge activities have focused on customers or local communities, have you observed or measured any increases in active travel in these groups? If yes, please provide details and where you have been able to measure this please explain how you arrived at this estimate.
We would be interested to know if your pledge activity over the last year has delivered a measurable increase in participation in physical activity. If so, please describe and provide an estimate of the level of increase and how you measured this. There is a 2000-character limit when completing this section.
