H1. Chronic Conditions Guide and Carers

A team within GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) comprising of representatives from Human Resources and Occupational Health (Health Safety and Performance Services) was set up in April to review the management of attendance and chronic conditions.HR policies have been reviewed to ensure that they support employees with health conditions to remain at work and workplace adaptations are recommended where required. Both long term and short term intermittent absence polices are being reviewed and this task should be completed by end of 2011.In July, two line manager guides were devised and communicated via the GSK intranet for easy access by managers. The topics were managing attendance and mental health management. In addition the referral form for use by managers to refer employees to Health, Safety Performance Services (HSPS) has been revised. This will improve communications and allow quicker referrals of employees with health conditions to HSPS. This will lead to a more effective management of absence cases with employees returning to work more quickly where possible.A guide on reasonable adjustments has also been written for easy reference to help employees and managers understand how to utilise workplace adaptations to reduce absence by enabling employees to stay at work on either; reduced hours, modified tasks or in alternative environments.Also a medical report request form has been revised which we use to request information from GP's and other specialists. This has resulted in shorter time periods waiting for specialist reports.GSK will host local General Practitioner workshops in December on the MED3 Fitness to Work Statements (Fit Notes) where discussions about workplace adjustments and adaptations will be held. These are being funded and organised by HSPS. A Mental Health Awareness webinar is planned for November 2011 with the Employee Assistance Programme Team to help reduce stigma and improve understanding of mental health conditions.In January 2012 a training module will be devised for line managers to help them manage attendance and sickness absence more effectively.A new intranet page has also been developed to signpost employees with chronic conditions to external webpages such as NHS Choices the Chronic Condition Guide.
