The workplace is a valuable health-promoting environment and Heinz is committed to improving the health of its 3,000 employees.In August 2010 we shared with all employees the range of updated factsheets from the Department of Health to help ensure that everyone knows how easy it is to get regular exercise. From early years and under fives through to older adults.At our Kitt Green manufacturing site near Wigan, Europe's largest food factory, an annual Well@Work intervention plan is developed. This plan enables the targets within the guidelines set by the Department of Health to be delivere.The annual improvement plan has physical activity as a priority area. We encourage exercise taster sessions within Heinz and we have established links to local authority gyms and corporate membership deals.Included in the drive to increase physical activity, we arrange an annual pedometer challenge to encourage team participation. Lunchtime walks are undertaken.The on site gym is advertised regularly with one to one sessions and circuit training, Wii fit challenges, and Tai Chi to name a few.Promotion is undertaken through the usual methods including TV screens, notice boards, all user emails, Well@Work information boards, tea bars and the moving message board together with the site weekly news letter.We work closely with Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust and Wigan Foundation Trust to align support and initiatives into the factory. In addition, in 2009 Heinz launched a Full of Beans programme for all employees with information to help look after physical fitness as well as offering health eating guidance. At our Hayes Park site in Middlesex we also offer regular yoga classes, evening jogging and free circuits classes.In 2011 we joined the Global Corporate Challenge with 147 Heinz employees participating in 21 teams from the UK Ireland. Over 16 weeks 236 million steps were recorded covering 151,000 km with an average of over 15,000 steps per person per day.After 16 weeks Heinz employees reported improvements:-to overall health 94%-improvement to daily energy levels 71%-improvement to overall health 94%-improvement in quality of sleep 56%-employees reporting a loss in weight 66%We continue to roll out programmes of activity as part of our commitment to promoting the health of Heinz employees.
