P1. Physical Activity: Community
1 January, 2013
Submitted: 19 April, 2015
Through your physical activity pledges you will be working with employees, customers/consumers and/or local communities. For each group (as applicable) please describe the specific activities or projects you have undertaken over the past year.
For example, employee incentive schemes to promote physical activity, awareness raising activities or improvements to facilites to promote active travel.
Modeshift now employs two members of staff. Our employees are STARS officers, working to promote sustainable and active travel to schools in England under our National School Travel Awards. Our two employees work from home and use public transport when visiting authorities and schools accross the country. Public Transport as a main mode enables actvie travel - ie journeys to and from rail and bus stations will be completed by actvie modes ie cycling and walking.
For example, supporting/sponsoring local physical activity programmes, promoting physical activity to customers through website campaigns or in-store materials.
Modeshift is focused on its members (who in turn are our customers) as well as schools around the UK. Modeshift has delivered two regional events in each region of England including a national conference to its members to share best practice in November 2014 - Michael Brannan of PHE attented this event to launch the National Physical Activity Framework
Modeshift has delivered three newsletters in the last 12 months to schools and members promoting active travel.
In November 2014, Modeshift was awarded a grant of u00a3184k from the DfT to expand our sustainable travel to school scheme STARS and launch the National School Travel Awards to all schools in England for free. We have communicated the scheme to all LAs in England and have begun to promote to schools. As of Apr 20th 46 LAs in England were signed up to Modeshift STARS, with 33 london boroughs part of the Transport for London version. This equates to 14,000 schools enrolled in the STARS scheme
For example, support for community-based physical activity programmes (such as funding, sponsorship or other promotion activity), working with local partners to engage communities is physical activity opportunities.
Modeshift members form part of a wider sustainable travel community. Modeshift has delivered two regional events in each region of England including a national conference to its members to share best practice. Modeshift has delivered three newsletters in the last 12 months to schools promoting active travel
Please estimate the number of people that (a) participated in your community programmes:
Please estimate the number of people that (b) were more active as a result of participating:
Please explain how you arrived at these estimates (if unknown, please explain why):
With 14,000 schools engaged in our STARS scheme - the messages of sustainable travel will be reaching at least 7,000,000 pupils (approx 500 pupils per school) plus staff and potentially parents as well. More than half of the schools will be taking part in active travel initiatives hence approx 3,000,000-4,000,000 pupils and staff can be reached.
Please indicate which of the following demographic groups within the local community that you have worked with to promote increased participation in physical activity:
Women, Men, Older adults (65+), Children & young people, Black or Minority Ethnic (BME) Communities, Disabled People, People from deprived communities, Other (please specify)
Children mainly, from all types of backgrounds. Our schemes include SEND schools too
We would be interested to know if your pledge activity over the last year has delivered a measurable increase in participation in physical activity. If so, please describe and provide an estimate of the level of increase and how you measured this. There is a 2000-character limit when completing this section.
This will vary from one LA to another. A good example is East Riding of Yorkshire where over 1000 journeys have gone from the car to active modes of travel
