Department for Communities and Local Government
P3. Active Travel
1 July, 2013
Submitted: 30 September, 2013
At present these targets are yet to be agreed. Starting from September 2013, DCLG in partnership with the Civil Service Physical Activity Challenge will measure the physical activity of our staff over the period of a week and bench mark this against the rest of the Civil Service. We will set our initial targets using this data and measure against this at least once a year.
The Department launched a Cycle to Work Scheme in November 2012, the scheme enables staff to purchase tax-free bikes, cut carbon emission and get fitter and healthier. Since the scheme was launched in November, 24 members of staff have enrolled on the scheme. The Department will continue to raise awareness of this offer in order to increase participation.
DCLG has also developed a new travel and subsistence policy this allows staff to claim expenses incurred when cycling within London on official duty (this includes expenses incurred when making use of the TFL Barclays Cycle hire).
DCLG promotes and encourages staff to participate in the annual Bike Week, National Walk to Work Week and Cycle to Work Day by posting notices on the staff intranet. Since 2012 DCLG staff have taken part in the Charity for Civil Service Walking Challenge. In the coming years, the department will continue to encourage active participation in these worthwhile activities.
