Submitted: 30 April, 2013
Please describe how you have supported staff with chronic conditions over the last year. There is a 2000-character limit when completing this section
Since April 2012 and signing up for this pledge, Macmillan has created a Well-being team that sits within Human Resources. This new working group has been developing a Well-being proposal for employees to roll-out in 2013 which focuses on the BITC (Business in the Community) Workwell model. The impact of this pledge sits within the ‘Better Physical and Psychological Health’ and specifically links to promoting better health for all employees.
So far, Macmillan has increased its knowledge internally using the specialist information produced for external companies relating to cancer. The ‘Essential Work and Cancer toolkit’ is now part of our core induction offer which has to be seen by all employees and managers on joining Macmillan. It provides information for those with cancer in work or those supporting others with cancer as well as giving specialist hints and tips for line managers in how to approach this situation. This pack, though written for employees with/helping others through cancer, can also be used as a best practice guide to support many other chronic conditions in the advice it provides. Any company can log on to the Macmillan website to order a toolkit.
As part of our future plans from April 2013 onwards, Macmillan will be joining forces with MIND to create ‘Mental Health Champions’ within the business and provide specialist training to our HR team to help support managers and employees alike. A series of learning seminars for line managers are currently being arranged in line with the training from MIND and will be evaluated at the end of 2013.
