Submitted: 29 May, 2014
Through your physical activity pledges you will be working with employees, customers/consumers and/or local communities. For each group (as applicable) please describe the specific activities or projects you have undertaken over the past year.
For example, employee incentive schemes to promote physical activity, awareness raising activities or improvements to facilites to promote active travel.
Mars believes that good health is good business and that our employees are our greatest assets. We therefore take the health and wellbeing of our employees extremely seriously, and recognise that a healthy, committed workforce is vital to business success. As a key element of health and wellbeing, we offer a range of physical activity initiatives across our UK sites.
This includes the access to onsite gyms at a number of our sites. These gyms are available for use seven days a week, and include access to a personal trainer. Other sites offer discounted memberships to local gyms and corporate gym memberships. We also offer safe access to outdoor space at a number of sites, where the walks provide the perfect opportunity to exercise at any time of the day. We also offer free physical activities at our sites, including regular exercise classes such as circuit training, boxercise, yoga, zumba and pilates which take place on a weekly basis. Our free exercise classes have proved so popular that we have increased the number of sessions available to meet demand. We also offer organised events such as netball, rounders and golf tournaments, and football and badminton clubs. We have also improved our onsite cycling facilities, and have recently signed up to a national bike to work scheme to encourage cycling among our associates.
We continue to encourage associates to participate in physical activities and challenges to raise money for the charity. As an added incentive to maximise participation, Mars match fund any money that was raised.
To engage some of our remote working employees and those that don't have access to onsite facilities we have used an external provider to deliver a pedometer programme which challenges teams to walk as many steps as they can over a 100 day period with individuals encouraged to complete a minimum of 10,000 steps of activity per day. As well as helping us engage hard to reach group of employees, it has also created an opportunity for teams to strengthen and build relationships.
For example, supporting/sponsoring local physical activity programmes, promoting physical activity to customers through website campaigns or in-store materials.
For example, support for community-based physical activity programmes (such as funding, sponsorship or other promotion activity), working with local partners to engage communities is physical activity opportunities.
The 'FA Mars Just Play' programme is a partnership between Mars and The Football Association (FA) to inspire adults to play football, whatever their level of experience and ability. The aim of the programme is to arrest the declining participation in regular grassroots adult football and encourage healthy, active lifestyles.
The Just Play programme set a target to get 150,000 new participants aged 16 or over playing the game for at least 30 minutes a week by September 2013.
Designed to remove the barriers to playing football, Just Play provides casual, play as you go 'kickabouts', supervised by an FA level one coach, at sites across the UK. It is part of Mars' wider commitment to ensure that consumers have a clear and easily accessible route into sport in order to maintain a healthy active lifestyle.
By 2013, Just Play had helped to boost enthusiasm and participation numbers by creating 200,000 adult places at Just Play kickabouts, opening over 200 Just Play centres nationwide and training over 400 Just Play organisers
Just Play is much more than a great brand partnership between Mars and The FA; the scheme makes a lasting positive impact on individuals, local communities and Mars Associates (employees). Apart from the physical benefits of regular football, the scheme helps people taking part in the sessions develop a sense of belonging and purpose or even gaining coaching qualifications.
Inspired by the success so far, Mars and The FA have set a new target to create one million opportunities to join a Just Play session between now and 2018.
As a result, Just Play will be the country's biggest and fastest growing adult football participation scheme.
Please estimate the number of your employees who participated in your workplace physical activity programmes over the last year and explain how you arrived at this estimate.
Has the number of your employees participating in your workplace physical activity programmes increased since last year? If unknown, please explain why.
We would be interested to know if your pledge activity over the last year has delivered a measurable increase in participation in physical activity. If so, please describe and provide an estimate of the level of increase and how you measured this. There is a 2000-character limit when completing this section.
