At Middlesbrough Environment City (MEC) we have "Fit Fridays" where each employee is given 1/2 hour to add to their lunch so long as they do something to keep fit. At the team meeting on a Monday a member of staff volunteers to lead the Friday's event, this could be walking, jogging, cycling or circuit training.
We also give each member of staff a budget of £50 per year which they can spend on anything that makes them more comfortable at work or towards items to keep fit. Staff members have purchased running shoes, walking boots, weather proof walking jackets, cycle pedals, physio, weight loss sessions, glasses etc.
As a local environmental charity we promote walking or cycling to meetings if they are within 1 mile of the office, we also pay mileage for the miles cycled on a bike.
MEC are part of the "Better Health At Work" programme and have achieved Bronze, Silver, Gold and Continuing Excellence, this has been approved for the second time by the Northern TUC. Health and wellbeing are now embedded into the culture and ethos of the charity and totally endorsed by the Board of Trustees.
