1 January, 2013
Submitted: 21 March, 2014
Through your physical activity pledges you will be working with employees, customers/consumers and/or local communities. For each group (as applicable) please describe the specific activities or projects you have undertaken over the past year.
For example, employee incentive schemes to promote physical activity, awareness raising activities or improvements to facilites to promote active travel.
For example, supporting/sponsoring local physical activity programmes, promoting physical activity to customers through website campaigns or in-store materials.
During 2013-14 we have offered sponsorship to community groups to enable Fitness Instructors to deliver sessions based around our outdoor gyms. One group has run regular sessions and reported over 1 stone weight loss in 10 weeks since Xmas 2013. Great work!!
For example, support for community-based physical activity programmes (such as funding, sponsorship or other promotion activity), working with local partners to engage communities is physical activity opportunities.
Caloo design, supply and install high quality outdoor gyms. See http://www.caloo.co.uk for further details. Our gyms are certified by TUV to test standard DIN 79000 - Permanently Installed Outdoor Fitness Equipment and offer a safe and affordable exercise opportunity that is inclusive and fun. Caloo would like to encourage communities to be more active by installing more free to use Outdoor Gyms into community spaces, schools and leisure environments. We will strive to promote our free to use outdoor gym equipment to local communities around the UK by means of raising awareness of our products and their health advantages with funders, specifiers and policy makers around the UK to enable greater community access to our products. It is our target to have at least one facility within every municipal authority and every school. We have worked hard to achieve this and now many potential providers and funders are aware of our products and the benefits to local communities - we are currently working with many potential funding providers. We have encouraged our clients to collect and share usage data to enable comparison with health statistics in the long term which we hope will encourage further funding for future projects. In 2013 we completed a contract with a NW Local Authority who commissioned a study from Liverpool John Moores University in relation to usage statistics and end user satisfaction. Report was interesting - 75% believed outdoor gyms are Easily accessible, Beneficial to health and enjoyable to use. 70% of participants found exercise outdoors more beneficial for health than exercising indoors and 80% of participants found exercise more enjoyable outdoors than indoors.
Average time of use was 19 minutes and over half said the gyms had an overall positive impact on their health.
We intend to continue to encourage policy, decision makers and funders to take into account the motivations, abilities, preferences and affordability for all members of any community when designing new leisure strategies. In the last year we have added the Monster Play range to our product portfolio and can now design, manufacture play, youth and sport spaces to encourage activity for users from toddlers to teenagers.
Please estimate the number of people that (a) participated in your community programmes:
Please estimate the number of people that (b) were more active as a result of participating:
Please explain how you arrived at these estimates (if unknown, please explain why):
John Moores Sample study was based on 162 participants at 10 locations. So if we assume each of our facilities has 16.2 average users and we have over 700 outdoor gymn facilities in the UK, the total number of regular users exceeds 10,000. This figure could increase substantially if school facilities are averaged at perhaps 50 users. We will see the total number exceed 30,000.
Please indicate which of the following demographic groups within the local community that you have worked with to promote increased participation in physical activity:
Women, Men, Older adults (65+), Children & young people, Black or Minority Ethnic (BME) Communities, Disabled People, People from deprived communities, Other (please specify)
Women, Men, Older Adults, Children & Young People, Disabled People, People from Deprived Communities.
We would be interested to know if your pledge activity over the last year has delivered a measurable increase in participation in physical activity. If so, please describe and provide an estimate of the level of increase and how you measured this. There is a 2000-character limit when completing this section.
We have installed approx 300 new Outdoor Gym facilities this last year from April 2013 to March 2014. Using same statistics as above - if every site has 16.2 regular users, this is an increase of 4860 persons being active. We feel the real usage is probably much higher so this number is well understated.
