H4. Healthier Staff Restaurants
1 January, 2013
Submitted: 23 April, 2014
Please decribe how you and your caterers have encouraged healthier restaurants/vending outlet/buffets (as applicable) for your staff over the last year. There is a 2000-character limit when completing this section.
The Shield Cafe, based on campus in Charterhouse Square, continues to provide a relaxed atmosphere and comfortable seating for a coffee break or some lunch. The Shield serves Costa coffee, iced drinks, soft drinks, sandwiches, paninis, salads and healthy snacks. We have discussed provision of low salt and low saturated fat options with the catering manager of The Shield, and the cafe is happy to comply with healthier eating suggestions. All foods, where appropriate, are grilled or toasted instead of fried, and soya milk and skimmed milk provided instead of full fat milk. No salt crisps are available for purchase, as are reasonably priced fruit. We are in discussions with the cafe regarding provision of Reference Intakes (RI) on the labels.
There are no vending machines available within CASH offices, offering unhealthy foods. Additionally, water is readily available at the Wolfson Institute, and regular refreshment breaks are encouraged. All meetings and social events attended by CASH are provided with fruit and no salt crisps or nuts, as well as water. We also utilise the British Heart Foundation guides to eating well at work; Think fit! Eat well!
