Annual Update:

Submitted: 31 May, 2013

Within Alliance Boots, Boots UK is the UK’s leading pharmacy-led health and beauty retailer selling an extensive Boots branded and branded exclusive range of food, drink and snacking products. Boots has long recognised its responsibility to support healthy eating and has implemented an ongoing programme to limit the salt content of the Shapers and Delicious ranges and the recent Jamie Oliver range. This programme ensures wherever possible that all Boots products are developed in accordance with strict nutritional criteria and maximum limits for salt.

We provide clear front of pack labelling to help our customers make healthier choices to reduce salt. This shows the amount of salt in a serving in a comparison with the 6g guideline daily amount (%GDA) enabling customers to understand the salt content of their chosen product and consider it in the context of their total daily diet. Shapers and Delicious products also combine this with ‘traffic lights’ to indicate whether the level of salt is high (red), medium (amber) or low (green).

Specific salt targets have been developed for the 80 food categories that contribute the most to a person's salt intake. Nine of these categories fall within our ranges and we are pleased to report that six of these (67%) meet the responsibility Deal 2012 salt reduction targets. We remain committed to supporting customers' healthy diet and lifestyle and will continue our programme to limit and review the salt content of all our food products.

Note: All responses are based on sales weighted average data for a 52 week sales period up to the end of March 2013 using the most recent product on pack sodium values. This includes products in the categories that have been on sale for the entire or part of the 12 month period. Where a product has been de-listed this has been included if we still operate within that category. At the time of reporting, six of the nine categories reported (67%) meet both the maximum and average salt targets (on a sales weighted basis) and no product exceeds the maximum salt targets.
