Submitted: 26 March, 2014
Through your physical activity pledges you will be working with employees, customers/consumers and/or local communities. For each group (as applicable) please describe the specific activities or projects you have undertaken over the past year.
For example, employee incentive schemes to promote physical activity, awareness raising activities or improvements to facilites to promote active travel.
For the 7th consecutive year, we are partnering with the Global Corporate Challenge as part of our aim of supporting the health & wellbeing of our employees. The Global Corporate Challenge (GCC) is a 12 month workplace health and wellbeing program aimed at changing the behaviour and improving the health of employees around the world. Promoting the GCC is a positive way to enhance one of our key scorecard areas, A Great Place to Work. The Company funds the registration fees - in 2013, 3,668 employees participated in the GCC from many AZ global locations including Mexico, US, UK, Sweden, Poland, Japan and India covering a distance of 1,889,880 miles (which equates to walking around the world 76 times) by walking, cycling and swimming.
At the start of the GCC (May), participants built their own personal profile called GCC Me, to discover their heart health, the impact of lifestyle choices on their wellbeing and receive ongoing, personalised advice on the small daily changes that create lifelong benefits. The first event is a 100 day virtual journey around the world focused on increasing physical activity and establishing sustainable habits with a daily target of 10,000 steps. During December, the GCC Sprint is an individual challenge designed to maintain physical activity during the holiday season. Participants select a virtual opponent and aim to outrun, walk, swim and cycle them over 16 days to end the year healthy, productive and raring to go in the New Year. During February, GCC Energy is run to enable employees to recognise the connection between their behaviours and energy levels. It reinforces the intrinsic benefits of staying active, eating well and introduces sleep, rest and recovery, as a vital part of a healthy life.
Statistics from past years involvement have consistently demonstrated the health and wellbeing benefits from participating in the GCC.
During the various years taking part in the GCC, the following benefits were reported:
- 88% reported an increase in their overall health & wellbeing
- 75% reported their relationships within their team as good or excellent
- 69% reported an increase in their quality of sleep
- 70% reported increase in energy
- 68% reported being able to handle stress better
- 57% reported a welcome loss in weight
Feedback from participants in 2013 indicated a 84% rating that their GCC experience was good or excellent and 92% of participants would be willing to take part in the GCC again.
For example, supporting/sponsoring local physical activity programmes, promoting physical activity to customers through website campaigns or in-store materials.
For example, support for community-based physical activity programmes (such as funding, sponsorship or other promotion activity), working with local partners to engage communities is physical activity opportunities.
Please estimate the number of your employees who participated in your workplace physical activity programmes over the last year and explain how you arrived at this estimate.
Has the number of your employees participating in your workplace physical activity programmes increased since last year? If unknown, please explain why.
We would be interested to know if your pledge activity over the last year has delivered a measurable increase in participation in physical activity. If so, please describe and provide an estimate of the level of increase and how you measured this. There is a 2000-character limit when completing this section.
