Submitted: 29 April, 2015
Please describe how you have encourged your staff to stop smoking and reduced other risks in the workplace to respiratory health over the last year. There is a 2000 character limit when completing this section.
There are several elements to the Battersea Power Station Development Company approach to occupational health management. The work to reduce risk to respiratory health began with working with designers to prevent or reduce exposure to hazardous substances through the careful selection of materials and work methods. The company employs occupational hygienists to provide exposure monitoring and risk control advice to contractors on site. BPSDC has set a minimum standard for addressing respiratory risk which has been agreed by key stakeholders and is now in place. All contractors and sub-contractors are required to meet this minimum standard. The Principal Contractors is mandated by BPSDC to undertake regular monitoring to provide assurance that the standard is being followed. In addition, the occupational health clinical service provides health surveillance to those at risk of exposure to respiratory health hazards. The work to prevent exposure, and the health surveillance / treatment service is further supported by the health and well-being campaigns that run regularly. Each month has a different theme and lung health and smoking cessation is always featured each year. Other campaigns run concurrently with national campaigns, so they are timed to compliment other national drives (such as national non-smoking day). Other elements to the campaign include healthy lifestyle choices, including increasing activity which can also work towards improving general lung health.
