H4. Healthier Staff Restaurants

Cornwall Council are working in partnership with their restaurant provider at their headquarters in Truro. Employees are provided with nutritional breakdowns, healthy food swaps and education around healthy eating and weight management. Changes made include:
Introducing local suppliers of fruit and vegetables, water, butter and preserves.
Procuring ingredients that are lower in sugar and fat, particularly saturated fat
Redesigning the hospitality offer with a range of menus and healthier alternatives tailored to individual needs
Adding fruit, light yogurts and lower sugar drinks to meal deal options
The provision of poster displays covering all menus with guideline daily amounts (GDAs), calorific and nutrient breakdowns
The development of intranet healthy eating pages which provide information on The Eatwell plate, Change 4life and NHS healthy eating pages.
Nutritional breakdowns and GDAs of food and drink sold at the staff restaurant are displayed on the healthy eating webpages
The production of table top swap options showing similar options which are lower in calories, sugar and fat (particularly saturated fat)
The opportunity to access free water in all areas
Removing salt from canteen and food outlet dining tables
Helping the provider increase their food hygiene rating from 3 stars to 5 stars
Employees are offered a 12 week free healthy weight course.
Future plans include:
Achieving the Chefs Award (for healthy options)
Working with Cornwall Councils two other restaurants
