We have confirmed with 3663 own brand suppliers that products in the business already meet the Responsibility Deal's artificial trans fat criteria. For future 366 own brand products coming into the business/ being re-developed, we have inserted a new policy into our supplier technical manual that all new/re-developed products have to meet the Responsibility Deal's artificial trans fat criteria.3663 hydrogenated vegetable oil policy: Hydrogenation (or hardening) raises the melting point of oils by the addition of hydrogen to carbon double bonds found in fatty acids of triglycerides. Whilst 3663 recognises there are positive effects of such a change (less oxidative deterioration, off-flavours are much slower to develop etc.), it also recognises that trans fatty acids ,which can be produced during the process of hydrogenation, can have detrimental heath effects such as potentially increasing the risk of coronary heart disease.Taking these potential detrimental health effects into consideration, it is 3663s policy that all own brand products are not to contain fully or partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. Additionally, fats and oils used as ingredients and in the preparation of 3663 own brand products (e.g. frying oils) should contain less than 2% total trans (this does not apply to sources of fat from ruminant animals). This must be taken into account when developing new products, as well as when making any product changes.
