Sickness rates are recorded and reported to senior staff. These figures are provided to the Cabinet Office and reported alongside the results of other Government departments on the website.

Sickness absence rates are used to shape activity to improve health and wellbeing by identifying areas in the Department where high absence rates are apparent or where particular causes of sickness absence are high.

The annual MOD staff survey includes questions relating to health and wellbeing to capture the feeling and engagement of the workforce. The Department is looking at options to broaden the range of these questions to develop a more detailed understanding of how staff perceive their health. The results of this survey have been used to shape the Department’s Health and Wellbeing Strategy to ensure that attention is given to those health issues that matter most to staff.

The Department will be looking at ways of capturing more detailed management information from across the organisation to more effectively report on and identify where high absence rates are an issue. Guidance on recording and reporting sick absence is available to staff to support positive management of health issues.
