The Midcounties Co-operative is part of Co-operative Retail Trading Group (CRTG) and, working with them, we have achieved the following:Become one of the first retailer groups to meet all the original 2010 targets for salt reductions set by the food standards agency (FSA) in 2006.Further salt reductions are on-going, and specific product reformulations during 2010 included own-brand crisps and snacks range, which achieved an average of 11.6% reduction in salt.In 2010 CRTG launched a new labelling scheme, integrating traffic-light and guideline daily amount (GDA) information. The use of integrated labels enables customers to quickly discern if the food has high, medium or low amounts of salt, enabling comparison of products at a glance, and to understand how the food contributes to their recommended daily intake of nutrients. The new scheme has been applied to all relevant new and relaunched own-brand products. The British Retail Consortium, of which we are a part of, in conjunction with the Food Drink Federation have jointly launched a process to identify the largest possible number of potential technical solutions for categories where salt reduction is proving problematic.
