P4. Physical Activity in the Workplace

Through your physical activity pledges you will be working with employees, customers/consumers and/or local communities. For each group (as applicable) please describe the specific activities or projects you have undertaken over the past year.
For example, employee incentive schemes to promote physical activity, awareness raising activities or improvements to facilites to promote active travel.
The Run England Workplace offer has been taken up by a number of employers whereby a beginner running group is set up from the workplace, specifically for their employees. Run England Activators have worked with these organisations by either supporting a member of staff to become a Run Leader or identifying an existing local Leader to take the group. In addition to offering funding for staff to attend the UK Athletics Leadership In Running Fitness qualification, support is provided through the provision of a Leaders manual, incorporating a standard 10 week beginner runner programme, template posters, photos and logos, guidance around organising the group as well as health and safety. Examples of successful workplace groups are:
John Lewis, Stratford, London. The Activator identified a local leader to get the workplace group going but since then a number of staff have become qualified leaders and organise a number of sessions each week which generally involve 10-15 staff each time. The initiative has been linked to a healthy eating campaign and John Lewis Team Stratford have gone on to take part in Charity Fun Runs together.
Albright International. A member of staff who is a Club Runner found out about the Run England programme when an Activator attended their Club meeting. She signed up for the Leadership In Running Fitness course and decided to set up a beginners course at her workplace. 14 people signed up for the course which was held at 5.15pm on Wednesday evenings, 9 completed the 10 weeks and 7 went on to run in the Andover parkrun, a free 5km run held every Saturday.
Crawley Well Being Team. The Team purchased Run England 321 markers to map out measured running routes in Manor Royal, a business district in Crawley. The routes have been advertised to the businesses to encourage their staff to run these routes at lunch times, or after work. They are also published on the Run England website www.runengland.org/321routes
For example, supporting/sponsoring local physical activity programmes, promoting physical activity to customers through website campaigns or in-store materials.
For example, support for community-based physical activity programmes (such as funding, sponsorship or other promotion activity), working with local partners to engage communities is physical activity opportunities.
