H6. Staff Health Checks
1 January, 2013
Submitted: 29 April, 2015
How many of your employees have used the staff health check offer? If unknown, please explain why.
Our regime for health checks for staff is as follows:
• All new starters complete pre-placement medical questionnaires which are reviewed by our occupational health provider
• All workers undertaking safety critical roles are required to undertake medicals before commencing work and then at regular intervals thereafter, depending on age
• All non safety critical workers are offered the opportunity to attend a confidential ‘wellbeing’ medical. During 2014 we extended our offer of these medicals to employees of our subcontractors. Whilst these medicals are voluntary, they were actively promoted during the year in order to encourage take up and this will continue in 2015. Medicals are conducted in the workplace during working hours which is particularly helpful to the large number of our staff who live away from home during the week and find access to GPs for routine checks very difficult to arrange as weekend appointments are normally reserved solely for urgent medical problems.
During 2014 we continued to run a monthly wellbeing clinic in our Head Office and in 2015 this has been extended to our Manchester office.
A total of 1516 medicals were conducted during 2014.
During 2014 we ran a number of company-wide campaigns aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of our workforce. These included blood pressure, cancer awareness (which was delivered by Macmillan Cancer Support) and the management of dust on our sites. In addition we ran campaigns to raise awareness of musculoskeletal disorders at our two principal offices. The full-day campaigns were delivered by an occupational health nurse and a physiotherapist and included a tour of the offices where the two health professionals engaged with staff at their desks and provided individual consultations on the set up of their workstations and made adjustments to chairs as required.
