1 January, 2013
Submitted: 1 May, 2014
Please describe how you have encourged your staff to stop smoking and reduced other risks in the workplace to respiratory health over the last year. There is a 2000 character limit when completing this section.
In addition to on-site stop smoking support for staff, and brief intervention advice being available through occupational health, a review of smoking was undertaken, and an action plan developed which saw
- use and location of smoking shelters reviewed and shelters better positioned to encourage smokers away from hospital entrances. Smoking shelterd contained NHS stop smoking posters and local contacts for stop smoking services,
- Staff feedback audit on their attitudes and beliefs about the smoking issues at work,
- reinvigoration of smoking cessation and wellbeing support for staff, patients and visitors,
training and development of OH and other supporting staff
- partnership working with public health partners and pharmacies.
Smoking cessation support is signposted through the Trust Intranet and posters / leaflets
The Occupational Health service has undertakedn a review of respiratory surveilllance and renewed its respiratory health surveillance programme for staff who may be at exposure risk to chemical irritants in the workplace.
A revised smoking policy is in final stages to update and incorporate issues around e-cigarettes and "vaping"
