In 2011, Heart UK launched 'Cholesterol and a healthier nation: shared responsibility for better public health'. This new report examines cholesterol in the context of NHS health checks. The health checks programme aims to help prevent heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease by assessing risk factors for these conditions in people aged 40 to 74. Physical activity can form an important element of improving health and wellbeing, and can be recommended following health checks. This report examines data from freedom of information requests sent to primary care trusts in England, and shows that rollout of health checks continues to be patchy. There is, however, some excellent work being done, and the report showcases some of the innovative prevention programmes currently taking place. The report includes eight key recommendations to help improve rollout of the health checks programme in England. The document can also be viewed at: http://www.heartuk.org.uk/pressroom/images/uploads/1312_heartuk_cholesterolhealthreport2011_final.pdf In 2011, Heart UK began exploring partnerships with gymnasiums. The chairty would like to help raise awareness of the role that physical activity can play in raising HDL or 'good' cholesterol.
