P4. Physical Activity in the Workplace

Through your physical activity pledges you will be working with employees, customers/consumers and/or local communities. For each group (as applicable) please describe the specific activities or projects you have undertaken over the past year.
For example, employee incentive schemes to promote physical activity, awareness raising activities or improvements to facilites to promote active travel.
The Department continues to have a dedicated physical activity lead post (in line with YMCA Activator best practice). The post works across all the Department sites to promote physical activity, done in partnership with the staff sports and recreation club, HASSRA. We have established a club across our London buildings and the club is now offering over 35 regular activities. These activities offer staff members a range of opportunities from zumba, yoga, pilates to lunchtime walks, in-house gyms (paid by staff contributions) to table tennis, 5 a side football, nordic walking and more recently a choir in both London and Leeds. Over 50 staff volunteers support the London based club and over 20 staff volunteers support the Leeds Club (which is a joint venture with staff from the Department of Work and Pensions).
In light of the changing health structures, HASSRA DH London and Leeds have begun a process to diversify the clubs membership to include ALL staff working in Department of Health buildings - to provide a strong leadership by practicing what we preach. We have supported recruitment drives for HASSRA and at present well over half the Department,s 2,300 staff are now members and taking part in activities to improve both their physical and emotional wellbeing - through exercise. Since our new London club has started we have had a significant increase in the number of staff joining the club - starting with just over 200 to now over 600 (across the London estate). With HASSRA DH London's new partner organisations we expect to see this figure to continue to rise.
This document builds on a great deal of work already under way and sets out areas for action by government as a whole and across the sectors to realise this long-term ambition.

The main document is accompanied by a series of annexes setting out:
- the benefits of physical activity
- the national framework for delivery
- work already in hand
- a series of case studies
-international best practice
We are beginning work to re-energise the Civil Service Physical Activity Challenge as part of our contribution to the Olympic legacy. We are proposing to engage other Government Departments in physical activity challenges to support an active nation. We will report our progress on this next year. We will continue to deliver this work in partnership our key delivery partner of staff sports and social clubs (which are funded and run by staff volunteers).

For example, support for community-based physical activity programmes (such as funding, sponsorship or other promotion activity), working with local partners to engage communities is physical activity opportunities.
