H5. Smoking Cessation/Respiratory Health

Our Trust is in active partnership with Gloucestershire Stop Smoking Service who provide advice to staff and patients. Our Trust has provided the opportunity for staff to attend a ‘Quit Club’ arranged locally, at times, to support staff attendance. Staff can also purchase Nicotine Replacement Therapy from our pharmacies at cost price.

Our “Smoke-free Site Policy” is clear on our intention to stop smoking in our workplaces and grounds, and that staff who wish to smoke are still signposted to quit support services, however, it is clear that staff who smoke should not do so in uniform or smoke within the boundaries of our hospitals. This policy is actively policed.

We have a Trust intranet site to provide information to all staff, including those who smoke, on support strategies. We also support “Stoptober” within our Trust, and look at innovative ways to engage staff who smoke.

Finally we have a ‘pod’ within our main Outpatient Department, where both staff and patients can access information, and at posted times, speak to staff from the Stop Smoking service. We will be both publishing and promoting to staff our new Staff Health and Wellbeing Strategy which has been co-authored with our Staff Side colleagues. This is expected to be published by January 2015 and places a mutual responsibility on ourselves as an aspirant 'employer of choice' to provide a healthy workplace, and our staff, who have a responsibility to do what they can to maintain their health. In this, we will recognise the challenges that staff are facing in terms of smoking being an addiction and will focus on the resources staff can access as well as the positive health benefits that quitting can bring.
