H1. Chronic Conditions Guide and Carers

Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital is a WHO accredited health promoting hospital which was achieved and has been maintained since 2005. The Trust pledges to aim to maintain this commitment throughout 2014.

The Trust has a sickness absence policy in place which has an overall aim to support early recovery and details an effective return to work process ensuring consideration is taken with regards to making reasonable adjustments (where appropriate). We pledge to ensure that this policy is widely accessible to all staff in our Trust and that our Managers are aware of this policy in order to support its implementation.

We also have websites for our Occupational Health Service and Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) which provide useful information on this subject, we therefore pledge to use our internal communication tools, such as our e-bulletin, to promote these websites and highlight the support available to any staff living with a chronic condition.

We pledge, as a HR team, to carry out monthly reviews of sickness absence data and contact Managers to ensure that this process is being followed and that support is given.

We pledge to ensure that our Managers are offered the opportunity to attend a “HR Clinic” to discuss any individual cases to ensure the best possible support and reasonable adjustments are made where applicable.

We also pledge to promote the use of external contacts such as Access to Work where chronic conditions are identified, in order to support any reasonable adjustments required.

The Trust also recognises the importance of promoting internal support such as our internal physiotherapy service and on- site gym for staff. We pledge to actively promote these and not just as a keep fit tool.

With regards to new employees, the Trust pledges to ensure that Health and Wellbeing is a permanent item on the induction programme.
The above pledge has also been included in our Health and Wellbeing Strategy for 2013 – 2015.
