Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust is committed to providing the best possible quality of services and care for the people it serves. Being the best employer is one of the organisation’s key strategic themes and is central to our vision and values of Caring for you.
The Trust fully acknowledges that its future success is largely reliant on attracting and retaining a talented and committed workforce which is able to meet the demands of the modern NHS, now and in the future. Caring for you, in staff terms, means placing staff health and well-being at the forefront of Trust priorities. The Trust has an established Health and Well-being (HWB) Strategy which was developed to consolidate existing initiatives and policies; to develop and implement new ideas and to embrace them under one branding so that staff can easily recognise them as ‘Health and Well-being’. This strategy applies to all Trust employees. It is recognised that the aims of the strategy can only be met by engaging fully with staff and with the full support of the Trust Board.

This strategy aims to:
Create a safe and healthy environment and working conditions for staff;
Improve the physical and emotional well-being of staff;

Encourage and support employees to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle;

Support people with manageable health conditions or disabilities to maintain access to or regain work;

Improve the quality of working life for staff; and

Create a healthier, more engaged workforce, thus optimising patient care.

The strategy will review key health and wellbeing risks for staff and implement an action plan to address this.

The Health and Well-being Steering Group will provide regular updates to the Trust Board on progress and activity related to this. Sickness absence will be managed actively by Managers supported by Occupational Health and HR. The Trust Board will support a pilot scheme of additional Occupational Health, HR and Physiotherapy resources to support manager’s with this.
