P1. Physical Activity: Community
19 July, 2013
Submitted: 16 June, 2015
Through your physical activity pledges you will be working with employees, customers/consumers and/or local communities. For each group (as applicable) please describe the specific activities or projects you have undertaken over the past year.
For example, employee incentive schemes to promote physical activity, awareness raising activities or improvements to facilites to promote active travel.
Our team has been encouraged to walk to work where possible. The use of walking meetings has been adopted as regular practice, and we now encourage our dog to be walked at lunchtimes by anyone who wishes to!
We finish at 3.30pm on Fridays to allow the team to attend a local yoga class - their favourite part of the week!
For example, supporting/sponsoring local physical activity programmes, promoting physical activity to customers through website campaigns or in-store materials.
We provide a well established digital news platform www.communitysportnetwork.co.uk which has a subscriber base of 5,000 sign ups, and is read in over 200 countries. We provide a fortnightly newsletter, and have adopted a thematic approach to give readers a targeted set of information. We use industry leaders and influencers to promote the benefits of physical activity through our 'Catch Up with@ series of interviews.
In our conference management work, we strongly persuade clients to include physical activity elements in to programme planning, and promote active travel as a recommended means of travel to our events.
For example, support for community-based physical activity programmes (such as funding, sponsorship or other promotion activity), working with local partners to engage communities is physical activity opportunities.
We have little direct engagement with the local community, but our team do use the local leisure club on a flexible membership basis.
Please estimate the number of people that (a) participated in your community programmes:
Please estimate the number of people that (b) were more active as a result of participating:
Please explain how you arrived at these estimates (if unknown, please explain why):
Estimates from activity take up from options at conferences we have managed, based on 50 take ups per event, and a 20% 'new' participant formula.
Please indicate which of the following demographic groups within the local community that you have worked with to promote increased participation in physical activity:
Women, Men, Older adults (65+), Children & young people, Black or Minority Ethnic (BME) Communities, Disabled People, People from deprived communities, Other (please specify)
We would be interested to know if your pledge activity over the last year has delivered a measurable increase in participation in physical activity. If so, please describe and provide an estimate of the level of increase and how you measured this. There is a 2000-character limit when completing this section.
