H7. Mental Health and Wellbeing

Committed since:

2 December, 2013

Delivery plan:

Submitted: 22 January, 2014

We at BAM Nuttall pledge to fully support employees who are experiencing any form of mental ill health and wellbeing issues. We recognize that mental ill health issues can affect any of our employees regardless of gender, age or job role and provide the assurance that there is no stigma attached to mental ill health and wellbeing issues.

Employees are encouraged to seek support either through their line manager or from the HR department.

All such matters will be dealt with confidentially and with sensitivity. The support employees will receive, which where appropriate will be practical in nature, will include:
• Listening
• Honest conversations
• Getting help and support from third party organisations
• Where necessary making temporary adjustments in the work environment
• Access to the independent Employee Assistance Programme

Guidance will be developed to help managers identify the early signs of mental health problems and how to support employees who may be affected by it. This guidance will include:
• Being confident to raise concerns with employees
• Listening and supporting
• Signposting organisations where help and support can be obtained
• Details of the independent Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)
• Where necessary making temporary adjustments in the work environment
• Support from HR
• Mediation / case conferences
• Confidentiality

During the next 12 months our HR Managers will attend Mental Health Awareness training.

Our absence management procedures require that return to work interviews are undertaken for all absences and where necessary we will make reasonable adjustments to the working environment to either maintain an employee in work or to support a sustained return to work.

All employees are able to access an independent Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) which includes the provision of confidential counselling and advice on a 24-7 basis. This service is accessed through a 0800 number or via the internet. The EAP also provides support for managers again on a 24-7 basis. Managers also have access to a managers support area through the EAP.

We will use World Mental Health Day, 10 October 2014, to raise awareness of mental ill health issues and to improve our culture of understanding and support.
