P3. Active Travel
5 April, 2011
Submitted: 23 May, 2014
Through your physical activity pledges you will be working with employees, customers/consumers and/or local communities. For each group (as applicable) please describe the specific activities or projects you have undertaken over the past year.
For example, employee incentive schemes to promote physical activity, awareness raising activities or improvements to facilites to promote active travel.
We have built on the work started last year and remained engaged with both Sustrain and Living Streets to promote Walking Month (and walk to work week) in May and Active Travel in June. We also worked with the Charity of Civil Servants to promote a corporate walking challenge within our staff groups to lead the DH's contribution to the Charity's Walking Challenge which starts in May and carries forward into Active Travel month. Our LGBT staff group, PRISM, rose to the challenge this year and also won an individual award and a group award, as part of their efforts. This will continue into future years with each staff group taking a turn at leading the Charity for Civil Servants Walking Challenge each year. We will report here each year on that activity.
We continue to promote the cycle scheme to enable staff to purchase their own bike to travel to work. We are also promoting bikability at our offices in Leeds and London (working in partnership with local authorities).
Working in partnership with our staff sports and social club, HASSRA, they have coordinated staff volunteers to act as champions for running, walking and cycling and conduct lunchtime activities and information for each of these groups.
For example, supporting/sponsoring local physical activity programmes, promoting physical activity to customers through website campaigns or in-store materials.
For example, support for community-based physical activity programmes (such as funding, sponsorship or other promotion activity), working with local partners to engage communities is physical activity opportunities.
Please estimate the number of your employees who report they are regularly using active modes of travel and explain how you arrived at this estimate.
Has the number of your employees using active modes of travel increased since last year? If unkwown, please explain why:
If your active travel pledge activities have focused on customers or local communities, have you observed or measured any increases in active travel in these groups? If yes, please provide details and where you have been able to measure this please explain how you arrived at this estimate.
We would be interested to know if your pledge activity over the last year has delivered a measurable increase in participation in physical activity. If so, please describe and provide an estimate of the level of increase and how you measured this. There is a 2000-character limit when completing this section.
