A4. Tackling Under-Age Alcohol Sales

Committed since:

1 January, 2013

Delivery plan:

Submitted: 8 May, 2013

Midlands Co-operative Society, alongside, The Co-operative Group has already achieved this pledge.

Through The Co-operative Group Midlands Co-operative is committed to 'Challenge 25', and has had this as policy since 2009. 'Challenge 25' means that our staff will require any customer buying alcohol who looks under 25 to provide acceptable ID to prove they are over 18.

All colleagues receive Refresher Training twice a year in the form of question and answer sheets. The training is handed out in store by the manager, completed by the colleague and checked by the manager. it would cover all of the topics above in brief, and may focus on particular areas the retail business feel need an extra push.

All checkouts have till prompts that do not allow any transaction for alcohol to proceed before the checkout operator has entered the perceived age of the customer. If this age is under 25 then the till will not allow the transaction to continue until appropriate ID has been checked, and the customer has shown they are over 18.

‘Challenge 25’ information is made available in all stores selling alcohol. These materials may include: posters, shelf barkers, badges for staff and information on customer facing till screens. We will use our internal communications channels to raise awareness of and understanding about ‘Challenge 25’ amongst employees of Midlands Co-operative Society. These channels include: Onebrief and the Society’ intranet.

New colleagues attend an induction before they commence work at their store. At induction colleauges receive full training in:
• What the law says
• The consequences of breaking the law
• The products involved
• The ages you have to be to buy those products
• The challenge 25 policy
• How to ask for ID
• What ID is acceptable
• How to refuse sales
• Signs to look out for that may indicate an underage customer
• What to do if they are under 25 (can’t sell alcohol unsupervised)
• A brief overview of the Tobacco Display Ban
