1 January, 2013
Submitted: 7 April, 2015
Please describe how you have supported staff with chronic conditions or those with unpaid caring responsibilities over the last year. There is a 2000-character limit when completing this section
We work closely with our Occupational Health (OH) provider to support employees who are diagnosed with chronic conditions with reasonable adjustments. This includes flexible working patterns, phased returns, equipment adjustments & discretionary sick pay. This is further supported by our private healthcare scheme, part of our flexible benefits, with CBT support & counselling as recommended by OH or an individual’s GP. We also have our confidential 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme available for all employees to use. This provides advice, support and counselling for all life events.
Our managers play an important role in supporting employees with such conditions. We have in place an OH manager advice line to give them quick access to information and advice to help them provide support in a caring and sympathetic way on a regular basis. We regularly analyse OH referrals & employee absences so we have a greater insight & understanding of employee health & wellbeing , with clarity regarding reasons for such illness.
In the last year we’ve ran healthy lifestyle events for all employees across all of our sites. This included a Cancer awareness and early diagnosis workshop hosted by Cancer Research UK. Healthcare cover has been extended to cover cancer treatment. Physiotherapy treatment is now managed by our healthcare provider with the help of a new physiotherapy supplier who has better geographical reach in the UK.
We’re looking at best practice and what we can do to support and promote overall wellbeing at work. This includes OH provision and policy review and online learning for managers on health management.
