The Restaurant at Basildon University Hospital is open to staff and visitors and offers a wide variety of food and beverages. There are numerous healthier food and drink options including a large salad bar, a variety of fresh fruit and low sugar drinks.The Restaurant uses seasonal and fresh ingredients which are sourced locallyLow fat sauces and salad dressing are used in all food preparationDrinking water is visible and freely available from dispensers throughout the Trust.The Restaurant reduced portion size in 2012A roast dinner is served every Sunday with fresh seasonal vegetables and chips are not served at all on a SundayFresh vegetable option with every mealBottled water and low sugar drinks available in the Restaurant and in vending machines throughout the TrustHealthy eating vending machine in the Restaurant available 24/7In the forthcoming year the Trust is working to make the Restaurant healthier by:Reviewing and updating recipes currently used to make meals which are lower in fat and saltDietetics team are working on a Healthy Eating Policy to be issued early 2013Investing in Dietplan6 Pro nutritional analysis software to calculate calories in all menu items served at the Restaurant to then include this information on menusPromotion of Healthy Eating Specials menus throughout the yearHealthy eating promotions such as a piece of in-season fruit and a bottle of water for £1 and fruits of the season on promotionThe Restaurant is seeking accreditation from the healthy eating Gold award with Essex County Council
